Discover Downham is a brand new heritage centre, set up by the Downham Market and District Heritage Society with the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as numerous other supporters. Located in the Old Fire Station on Priory Road, Downham Market (West Norfolk) the Centre has been fully renovated and is opened to the public Thursday-Saturday each week.
The Centre is run and managed by volunteer trustees, along with two paid members of staff who each work 2 days a week. Additionally, the Centre relies heavily on local volunteers to assist with all aspects of it’s operation, from archiving and displays to the day to day operation of the site when it is open to the public.
Discover Downham can offer a variety of volunteer student placements as part of the grant given by the Heritage Lottery Fund to work with talented students to develop their skills and experience in opportunities and upcoming projects. 12 placements are available over the next three years, and they can vary in length, time scale and activities undertaken.
Within the available resources, volunteers and staff, we are able to offer placements tailored to student’s interests and requirements. The placements will be managed by the Learning Officer (Meg Barclay), although placements will also involve working with other members of the Centre staff, trustees and volunteers. Full training and orientation will be given to all students undertaking placements, as well as a DBS check where needed. These placements can be used to count towards qualifications such as Duke of Edinburgh. There may also be the opportunity of undertaking appropriate SHARE Museums training and volunteering qualifications.
Downham Market has good rail links from surrounding areas such as Cambridge, Kings Lynn, Ely and Kings Cross London. Local bus services are also available.
